Our top story this evening.
President Moon Jae-in says the DMZ meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un this past weekend symbolized an end to hostile relations between North Korea and the U.S.
He added that more imagination is needed to help faciliate future dialogue.
Our Shin Se-min starts us off.
President Moon Jae-in called the recent North Korea-U.S. meeting at the Korean border... as an end to hostile relations between the former adversaries.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday,... President Moon said the impromptu meeting at the DMZ signifies the start of a full-fledged era of peace,... and was only made possible due to a fresh diplomatic approach.
"Although there were no agreements on paper between North Korea and the U.S., their actions signified a declaration to end hostile relations and start an era of peace."
The president pointed at how there was no extra security detail at the very moment when the U.S. leader was stepping onto North Korean soil, for the first time since the armistice was signed 66 years ago implying a solid level of trust between the two leaders.
He added... that if the two parties keep that moment in mind in future negotiations,... it could lead to tangible results.
Moon said progress was made possible thanks to the personal rapport between the leaders as well as the reduced border tensions,... including the disarming of the Joint Security Area in Panmunjeom following a military accord between the two Koreas.
Moon said,... that in his conversation with his U.S. counterpart... he emphasized the positive effects on the economy and security through the joint inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex,... to which Trump expressed support and urgency to establish peace.
President Moon, who had lobbied hard for that nuclear diplomacy between the North and the U.S.,... also gave credit to the respective parties.
"The impressive Panmunjeom meeting between the leaders of North Korea and the U.S. became a reality through President Trump's unconventional offer via social media and Chairman Kim's bold response. That shocking proposal and bold move are the fruits of their imagination and unconventional thinking."
"In order to achieve the historic task of complete denuclearization,... on the Korean Peninsula,... President Moon says a constant flow of imaginations and thinking outside the box is necessary perhaps indicating a more unconventional nuclear diplomacy down the line.
