김정은, 왜 판문점行 선택했나... 북미관계 개선 돌파구 의도?

President Trump's proposal of a meeting with Kim Jong-un came at the very last minute on Twitter.
The North Korean leader is not known for spontaneous diplomacy, so what made him agree to go?
Oh Soo-young explains.
An impromptu one-on-one with Donald Trump may have been the very opportunity Kim Jong-un was waiting for.
Upon their surprise handshake and meeting at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjeom, the North Korean leader said the U.S. President's sudden tweet requesting a meet up came as a surprise.
And he appeared to extend an invite of his own.
" When the time is right, if President Trump has a chance to visit Pyeongyang, it would leave a great mark and change the political history of the world"
Observers say the unexpected meet-up may have been unplanned, but it came at an opportune time for the North Korean leader.
"If you look at the North Korean daily Rodong Sinmun , it says Kim accepted the U.S. President's request and agreed to meet him, so that would significantly help him reinforce his status as a dignified leader to the North Korean people. Also, in terms of denuclearization talks, it seems Kim wanted direct, one-on-one communication with Trump, not through his aides like Pompeo or Bolton. So this provided that breakthrough."
Fresh momentum for dialogue was created between Pyeongyang and Washington through Kim and Trump's historic encounter at Panmunjeom.
And it's notable how this momentum was revived by the interaction between the top leaders themselves, rather than between working-level officials,... coming after their recent exchange of friendly letters.
