Remains of drowned migrants return to home country El Salvador for burial
  • 5 years ago
The bodies of the father and daughter who drowned together while trying to cross the Rio Grande River from Mexico to the U.S. have been returned to their native El Salvador.
The remains of 25 year-old Oscar Alberto Martinez and his baby daughter Valeria returned to their home country by land on Sunday.
The two victims are to be transferred to a cemetery in southern San Salvador, to be buried after a day-long vigil on Monday.
Pictures of Valeria, faced down with her arm wrapped around her father's neck, broke hearts around the world and fueled concern on the dangers that migrants undertake in trying to reach the U.S.
The two asylum seekers were swept up in a current between Matamoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas on June 23rd.
