N. Korea, China hail Xi's trip to N. Korea as opening new historic era
  • 5 years ago
We begin with our top story this afternoon.
Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his two-day state visit to North Korea on Friday.
Though short, it could have a significant bearing on the future of nuclear talks between Pyeongyang and Washington as well as the ongoing U.S.-China trade war.
Our Oh Jung-hee starts us off with a wrap-up of the fifth Kim-Xi summit.
An opening of a new chapter in bilateral relations that's how both North Korean and Chinese media are describing the fifth summit between Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping on Thursday and Friday.
Unlike the first four summits where Kim made his way to China, this time, Xi travelled to Pyeongyang, a move that Beijing calls "a major diplomatic action" that comes in the backdrop of complex international situations.
North Korea's media also trumpeted the highlights of Xi's visit.
Pyeongyang's state-run media reported Saturday that Kim and Xi exchanged "constructive opinions" regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
It added the two leaders saw eye-to-eye on a number of important issues and built a consensus by holding five summits during the past year.
The latest trip by Xi was the first state visit to North Korea by a Chinese leader in 14 years.
And through this trip, Xi Jinping made clear. his will to exert greater influence on discussions surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
During Friday's luncheon, Xi said China will work to provide a political solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
This falls in line with his remarks on Thursday, that he will help to address Pyeongyang's security concerns.
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyeongyang on Thursday afternoon.
He held a summit with Kim Jong-un... and attended a banquet and a group gymnastics performance along with their wives.
On Friday, Kim and Xi visited the Sino-Korean Friendship Tower, built in 1959 to commemorate Chinese soldiers who died fighting in the Korean War.
After holding a luncheon with the North Korean first couple, Xi left the North in the afternoon.
