Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is calling for all out efforts to prevent an outbreak of the highly contagious African Swine Fever in South Korea,... especially after the disease was reported in North Korea.
Speaking at a meeting with cabinet ministers on Wednesday,... Lee said the government will seek to reduce the wild pig population nationwide,... as they could carry the virus across the border.
Lee noted that wild pigs can travel as far as 15 kilometers a day, on land and water.
He said quarantine and disinfection measures will be stepped up along the border,... as well as at gateways and ports.
He added the government has strengthened penalties for people that bring banned livestock into the country.
Lee also said local farms will be banned from feeding their pig leftover foodstuff.
There's currently no vaccine for African Swine Fever,... but the disease does not affect humans.
