Sweatshops at sea? Indonesian workers report harsh conditions in global fishing industry
  • 5 years ago
Dozens of Indonesian fishermen have spoken out against the exploitation of workers at sea. In sworn statements to police, they reported non-payment, overwork and even incidents of violence, and were often misled about what to expect at sea. The exact number of such cases of people being “trafficked at sea” is not known, but authorities estimated in 2016 that some 250,000 Indonesians were working without legal protection as they joined crews on foreign boats.
