San Francisco (USA), May 16 (EFE/EPA) – (Camera: John Mabanglo). A dead gray whale washed ashore near Pacifica State Beach on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cetaceans found dead in the San Francisco Bay in the last two months up to 10.

Researchers and marine biologists were able to examine the carcass, however, it was too dangerous to carry out a full necropsy as the whale washed up on a rocky shoreline in an intertidal area.

According to experts at The Marine Mammal Center, four of the whales examined so far died from malnutrition while four others died after colliding with ships.

“Biologists have observed gray whales in poor body condition during their annual migration this year potentially due to anomalous oceanographic conditions over the past few years that have contributed to shifting food sources”, the Center said in a statement.

The cause of death for another whale that washed ashore on Apr. 30 is still unknown.
