American country music singer, Earl Thomas Conley, reached number one position in the BiIllboard Hot Country Songs charts with eighteen singles during the '80s.

One of those was "Fire and Smoke" which was released in April 1981 as the second track from the album of the same name. At the end of that year, the single was named number one song of the year.
