In Salt Lake City Utah, city officials believe that allowing the many homeless individuals to remain on the street will drain the city of finances.
After following the lives of 39 frequently arrested homeless men, new data suggests that on average these men spent more than 15,000 days in jail. This, combined with the price of their living expenses, arrests and ambulance calls cost the city more than $2.6 million between 2002 and 2006.
City officials believe that providing these men with low-cost housing will not only significantly reduce these costs, but will also serve as a means to rehabilitate individuals, frequently arrested from trespassing, intoxication and other liquor and drug related violations.
In the effort to provide housing for the homeless Utah has already opened two new apartment complexes, Grace Mary Manor and Sunrise Metro. Each of the buildings will provide individuals with help tackling addiction, employment and mental instability.
