"Prank". Josef Strauss composed this Polka with the playful title, Schabernack, for one of the first balls during the carnival season of 1861. The house ball on 14 January 1861 at the Schwender establishment would seem to be suitable occasion, for right outside the Mariahilfer line in Rudolfsheim there were always revellers who were inclined to play pranks on their fellow citizens in order to have some harmless fun with them. The Polka was actually mentioned for the first time in a notice which appeared in several Viennese newspapers on the 24th of January and which contained the invitation to the great Strauss benefit ball on 5 February 1861, at which all three Strauss brothers (for the first time also Eduard) conducted the dance music. On 1 February 1861 in the Fremden-Blatt newspaper, a preview of the concert on the 3rd of February in the Volksgarten appeared, announcing the new works, Dividenden-Walzer Op. 252 and Camelien-Polka Op. 248 by Johann, as well as the Debardeurs-Quadrille Op. 97 and the Schabernack Polka Op. 98 by Josef Strauss. The work was thus heard on this occasion for the first time in Concert. The lively, amusing Polka is among the best compositions by the brothers Johann and Josef Strauss for the carnival season of 1861.
