The Maharashtra government decision to introduce an amendment to the rent control act is facing stiff opposition from tenants and political figures alike. The amendment is touted as a law which will increase landlords' power over tenants and expose the latter to exploitation and eviction. The amendment will result in a massive hike in rents for tenants living in flats over 847 sq feet and rented shops above 540 sq feet.
