In the biggest gamble of his political career, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio of Naga People's Front (NPF) had contested the Lok Sabha polls this time. That risk paid off handsomely as Rio emerged victorious.

He won by over four lakh votes, defeating his nearest rival K V Pusa of Congress in a triangular contest.

Only the second chief minister after Narendra Modi to contest the LS polls, Rio had taken the plunge eyeing a ministerial berth at the Centre. NPF had already joined the NDA in March.
