As the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) gets ready to test-fly the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk-III (GSLV Mk-III) this week, S Ramakrishnan is a very excited man. This former director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) was the first chief of the GSLV Mk-III project which came into being in October 2002.GSLV has a solid propellant first stage surrounded by four strap-ons using liquid propellants. Its second stage uses liquid propellant. The cryo stage forms the third stage. For years, India used Russian-made cryo engines. In January 2014, ISRO successfully tested the first Made-in-India cryo stage aboard the GSLV.
