Govt, Opposition face-off likely over TRAI Amendment Bill
  • 5 years ago
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) looks to be heading for its first face-off with a united opposition over a proposed legal amendment seeking to remove a hurdle in the appointment of Nripendra Misra, former chairman of the telecom industry watchdog, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principal secretary.

The government introduced the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill on a day when it had already run into flak for passing a controversial Bill that paves the way for the Polavaram irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh by merging some areas of the newly formed Telangana state with Andhra Pradesh. This Bill was passed by a voice vote amid vehement protests from members of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP-led) NDA has a sizeable majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha, with 332 seats.
