India Debates: Narendra Modi outflanks congress?

While it formalized Indore MP Sumitra Mahajan's candidature for Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday, the Modi government kept Congress guessing on the posts of leader of opposition and deputy speaker.
Government sources said while the deputy speaker's post would go to the opposition, there is no clarity yet over the party affiliation. A decision will be taken after the Speaker's election on Friday afternoon.
The government is equally non-committal on whether Congress can claim the leader of opposition's post with senior ministers pointing to precedents when the appointment was not made.
NDA managers pointed out no LOP was named during the tenures of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi to say that Congress could not now claim a different yardstick for itself.
