News X: India wants stability, not third front government

Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK on Monday announced that it has entered into an alliance with CPI (M) for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Making the announcement, Jayalalithaa said that she expected the alliance to be very successful.

Asked about who would be the Prime Ministerial nominee of this 'Third Front' alliance, Jayalalithaa said, "It is pointless to enter into a discussion of who the PM will be. It will be discussed after results are out." Jayalalithaa had also finalised a seat-sharing arrangement with CPI on Sunday.

The plan to form a grouping of non-Congress, non-BJP parties is gaining momentum with leaders of 11 parties - which between them have 92 MPs - meeting this week to form a block that will attempt to prevent the 'lame duck' government from turning the vote on account into an opportunity to announce pre-poll sops or landmark legislation.

In its January 31 edition, ET had reported the coming together of these regional forces in an interview with Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar.

"I was part of the earlier Third Front experiments. We will soon formalise a new front," said Yadav. "This is a lame duck government and we will not allow new legislation or announcements that require people's support. This is the last session of Parliament and we will use this opportunity to tell the people that as a group we are bigger than Bharatiya Janata Party," the JD(U) president said.

Further, JD(U) is planning to bring together all erstwhile 'Janata Parivar' parties at a separate meeting that has been tentatively scheduled for February 9, Yadav said. The invitees include Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Deve Gowda, former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Meanwhile, commenting on the emergence of a Third Front for the 2014 general election,s BJP leader Arun Jaitley said, "The more noise we hear about the Third Front, the greater will be the desire to elect Narendra Modi led NDA government which has an ability of its own to form a government."

"The essential requisite of a Third front is equidistance from the Congress and the BJP. How can the JD(U) and the Samajwadi Party claim that? The JD(U) lost out to the RJD in a bid to befriend the Congress. The SP kept the UPA in power for ten years," Jaitley hit out.
