ven as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said a small group of people were responsible for triggering off communal violence in Muzaffarnagar, a meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) would be held today after a two-year gap.
At the National Communal Harmony Awards function held here, Singh also said it was the solemn duty of each citizen of the country to resist the forces causing division in the country.
The NIC meeting, called in the wake of fears of polarisation in Uttar Pradesh and several other States in the Hindi heartland in the run up the general elections, is expected to discuss the ways and means to combat communalism and casteism. and also Women safety will be addressed.
To be chaired by Singh, this particular meeting would primarily focus on the incidents like the Muzaffarnagar riots. In fact, since September last Uttar Pradesh has seen a series of smaller incidents of communal clashes across the state.
