First Mohan Bhagwat then Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Two virtually back-to-back statements from the BJP and RSS today pointed to how the issue of rising sexual crime and violence is being politicised. First it was RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat who told the crowds that rape is a western evil, prevalent in cities and not in villages where Indian values hold sway. Ironically Bhagwat was in Assam where just the day before women in a village had publicly beaten up a man for alleged rape. And in Madhya Pradesh, a BJP minister Kailsah Vijayvargiya said rape is punishment for women who cross the limits of decency. A rattled BJP rushed to reprimand Vijayvvargiya while defending Bhagwat. So we debate today - Is the BJP fundamentally anti-women? Is the RSS right in calling rape a 'western' phenomenon? Is sexual crime being politicised by the BJP/RSS?
