Jaipur, Punjab start women helpline number - NewsX

Inspired to take preventive measures after the ghastly rape and assault on a Delhi para-medic that resulted in her death, various parts of the country have been waking up to the idea of a dedicated women's helpline. One such helpline is being installed in the Jaipur Collector's office. The helpline provides phone and e-mail access to women in distress. Named the Garima Helpline, the service will take note of any complaints ranging from eve-teasing, harassment, stalking, assault, blackmail, rape or any form of threat to with women concerned. Planning intervention action the caller's identity will be kept secret. Police decided to train girls and women in self-defence techniques in a special drive. In a bid to develop a sense of security, A similar helpline takes shape in Phagwara district of Punjab. The toll-free helpline will operate for 24-hours that is round the clock and women in distress can dial number 1091. The govt assures that action will be taken immediately. Meanwhile, Punjab police too plan to train women in combat tactics to fend of attackers if caught suddenly.
