Anti-Communal Violence Bill : Uproar in Rajya Sabha
  • 5 years ago
The Prevention of Communal Violence Bill was deferred on Wednesday after a huge uproar when it was tabled in the Rajya Sabha. The Opposition questioned the legitimacy of the Bill on the grounds that the Bill will encroach on the rights of state governments and goes against the federal structure of India.

The Congress retaliated to that charge by bringing up the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying that a communal incident like that is not a state subject and must be probed. The government also said that the Centre will investigate state officers in a law and order situation only with the state government's consent.
