Congress suffers setback in Tehri, scrapes through in Jangipur - NewsX

Its been a mixed bag of victory for the Congress in the hi-profile bypolls at Jangipur in West Bengal and and Tehri in Uttarakhand. While President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhjit Mukherjee won the Jangipur Lok Sabha Seat, Uttarakhand CM Vijaya Bahuguna's son Saket Bhauguana lost to BJP's candidate Mala Raj Laxmi Shah in Tehri. Mala Raj Laxmi Shah is a member of the Tehri's royal family. Abjijit Mukherjee won in Jangipur by a margin of 2,536 votes defeating his nearest CPI-M rival Muzaffar Hussain. Abhijit polled 3,32,919 votes, while the CPI-M candidate bagged 3,30,383 votes. The current winner's father Pranab Mukherjee had won the same seat by a huge margin of over 1.28 lakh votes in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. The by-election was held on October 10 as the seat had fallen vacant after Pranab Mukherjee was elevated to the highest office of the country.
