Jaipur: Asaram Bapu was today sent to Jodhpur Central Jail for 14 days amid multiple protests, with the self-styled godman appealing to supporters to "keep patience".
A Jodhpur district and sessions court remanded him in judicial custody on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl after Jodhpur police made no request for further remand.
There were minor scuffles and a lathi-charge outside the jail — where actor Salman Khan was lodged in connection with a black buck poaching case — as about 300 supporters had gathered to protest his arrest. There had been protests at the court too.
A bail application moved by Asaram's lawyers K.K. Menon and Vikas Soni claiming the 72-year-old guru was unwell and should be sent to hospital was rejected today. They are likely to move a plea again tomorrow.
Jodhpur DCP Ajaypal Lamba told the media: "Our investigations are moving in the right direction and our case is very strong the allegations levelled against him were found to be true. He is perfectly OK mentally and physically fit and his claim of having a neurological illness has been proved a lie."
A team of doctors from Sampoornanand Medical College had examined Asaram and found him to be fit. A potency test conducted on him yesterday was positive.
