Part of the Fanling golf course in Hong Kong’s northern New Territories region has been identified as a site that will be developed to ease a local housing crunch.
The Hong Kong government announced on February 20, 2019, that a fifth of the 172-hectare (425 acre) course will be taken back by the government in 2023 to build homes.
The location is earmarked for at least 4,600 flats, more than half of them public housing.
The government says there are no plans to build additional homes on the approximately 140 hectares that will remain in use for golf.
The redevelopment plans had generated intense debate, with the city’s wealthy and golf aficionados saying the Hong Kong Golf Club is an important training ground being placed at risk, while others argued that the rich should take share the sacrifices needed to resolve housing shortages for all.
