At least 70 people have died in a fire that engulfed several buildings in the historic Chawkbazar district of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka. The blaze reportedly started on a gas cylinder before quickly spreading through a residential building where chemicals were stored. The flames raced through adjoining buildings, which were also used as chemical warehouses. Traffic jams and narrow lanes in the area made it hard for people to escape and made it difficult for firefighters to tackle the blaze. It took them more than nine hours to bring the fires under control.
