A group of divers have freed sharks they found tangled up in fishing nets off the coast of Papua province in Indonesia.
The rescue in early January 2019 started after one of the divers spotted a dead shark hanging from a traditional fishing platform. The divers spent several days looking for sharks that were still alive in the nets, eventually rescuing about seven by moving the netting and removing hooks in the animals’ mouths.
While local fishermen have no interest in consuming or selling the animals, sharks are often caught up in nets targeting other fish.
