"Zephyr". On 6 February 1861, several newspapers in the capital and court seat of Vienna invited the public to a benefit ball by the Strauss brothers, which was to be held in the new Dianasaal on the banks of the Danube on carnival Monday, 11 February. For this ball Johann Strauss composed his gay Grillenbanner Walzer op. 247, dedicated to Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha on the occasion of his marriage to Constanze Geiger. Josef expanded the dance repertoire with a new French Polka, which he entitled zephir. It was a gentle, soothing work, appropriately evocative of the name zephyr (mild southwesterly wind). Its performance must have been a placid Intermezzo at this ball, which according to contemporary reports was "quite an event". Publisher Carl Haslinger waited until June 1861 to release the piano score. The work remained on the Strauss concert programmes through the summer.
