"The High Life". Josef Strauss wrote a lively polka for the house ball scheduled for 19th January 1859 at Carl Schwender's establishment. It was expected that this fete would be a "big to-do", where food and drink would not be spared. Josef Strauss accordingly gave his merry, frolicsome, work the title Saus und Braus. As the Austrian dictionary confirms, the phrase "in Saus und Braus leben" means not only to live the high life, but also not to want for anything. As stated, that was indeed the expectation at Schwender's house ball. There was no report about the ball's outcome, but the polka performed by Josef during the late hours of 19th January must have become very successful; the work was placed on the musicians' stands at all the subsequent balls during the carnival season of 1859. This polka appeared in print on 20th August by Verlag Haslinger.
