Like many Austin natives who grow up musically inclined, Jeff Warren Johnston’s sensibilities were shaped by some of the area’s towering talents — from Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm to B.W. Stevenson and Roky Erickson. But the Americana, rockabilly and outlaw-country songs populating his new album, Undiscovered Country, originally were conceived as parodies of sorts — until, he admits, “I developed a deeper appreciation of the genre and became comfortable with my southern roots.” So comfortable, in fact, he was able to recruit a who’s who of Austin talent to accompany him on these 12 tracks, including producer/guitarist Rich Brotherton, steel guitarist Lloyd Maines, guitarist Redd Volkaert, bassist Bill Whitbeck, organists Stefano Intelisano and Riley Osbourn, fiddler Warren Hood and the Tosca String Quartet, arranged by Stephen Barber. Even the album art is a nod to Austin's musical history; it was created by legendary illustrator and poster artist Jim Franklin. “I believe it’s important to remember and pay tribute to those people who helped Austin become this incredible artistic beacon,” says Johnston. With Undiscovered Country (April 6, 2018), he does exactly that.
