S. Korean defense minister says peace requires strong nat'l defense

South Korea's defense chief stressed the importance of a strong national defense in achieving peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Jeong Kyeong-doo made the remarks in an address to a year-end conference Wednesday morning... attended by about 140 commanders and senior officials from each branch of the military and from the defense ministry,... including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Park Han-ki....
The minister said that despite the ongoing efforts to ease tensions between Seoul and Pyeongyang,... the military has to maintain a firm defense posture and combat readiness... while fully implementing inter-Korean military agreements.
He added that the government's two main pillars of security strategy are a strong national defense and peace.
