In the spring of 1858, Josef planned several double-bill concerts in association with the capable and popular military band director Josef Kovacs at Ungers casino in Hernals. Although very inclement weather resulted in the cancellation of these events, the new works prepared by the industrious "Pepi" endured. He accordingly announced on 6 June 1858 in the Fremden-Blatt newspaper that at his sunday concert at Ungers, on said date, he would perform the Bon-Bon polka francaise for the first time. The work must have been a hit with the public, for it remained the whole summer in the Strauss orchestra's repertoire and ventured into those of military bands. Eventually, the distinctive and original polka must have been forgotten by the composer himself: Josef failed to mention it in the notes that he drafted much later. This polka is a fresh and lively dance piece, as pleasing and delicious as a piece of candy.
