The International Monetary Fund appointed Indian origin Gita Gopinath as its Chief Economist. Gita Gopinath who is the first woman Chief Economist, will succeed Maurice Obstfeld. She will also be the second Indian after Raghuram Rajan to hold that position. Gopinath currently serves as the John Zwaanstra professor of International Studies and economics at Harvard University. She has also served as a member of the eminent persons' advisory group on G-20 matters of the Finance Ministry and was appointed as Economic Advisor to the Kerala Chief Minister in 2016.
