"Masks". The high-spirited, galloping Masken-Polka came into being at the beginning of 1857 and was performed for the first time by its composer at the Strauss benefit concert at Sperl's, which provided the sizable audience with the traditional musical carnival revue by the Strauss brothers. In the round-up of novelties, Johann was represented by nine compositions, Josef this time by only four works. Naturally, one would assume that this polka had been played earlier at the masked ball, but the notes of the composer and of horn player Franz Sabay both indicate 23 February 1857, the date of the benefit concert at Sperl's, as the time of the first performance. In the Summer of 1857, the small work also was published by Haslinger.
