"Dioscuri". The carnival season of 1857 represented the second time that Johann and Josef Strauss led the Strauss orchestra as conductors of equal rank at the very numerous carnival parties. Together they also saw to the dance music for the great benefit ball, which was held on 16 February 1857 in the Sofiensaal. "Pepi" contributed with his waltz "Ball-Silhouetten" Op. 30, and the beautiful, melodious polka mazurka "Herzbleamerl", Op. 31 and also completed a quadrille, which he performed on the night of the ball, title "Dioscure". It is not known whether Josef Strauss's intent was to say that he was now acting as independently as his brother, as in the Greek myth of the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux. Even the title page illustration for the first edition of the piano score did not provide any hint in this regard. One thing Josef could safely aver, however: as a composer, he was now of equal rank with his popular brother Johann.
