"The Good Old Days". At the beginning of August 1856, Josef Strauss organised a fête at the "Sperl" establishment, called "An evening at an 1820's Ball in memory of the late Strauss and Lanner" and promised to perform works from the earliest periods od these two masters of Viennese music. In addition, Josef wrote a pleasing waltz score for this ball entitled "Die guten, alten Zeiten" (The Good Old Days). Since the celebration on 4th August 1856 was interrupted by rain, Josef had to welcome opportunity of extending another invitation to the Ballnacht vor dreissig Jahren on 11Th August. It was again well attended and complte success. This time it was reported in the Wanderer: "Josef Strauss, this composer who has become so quickly and generally beloved, performed his newest waltz, a very melodious, lively and brilliantly instrumented score, to the greatest applause and had to give frequent encores of this splendid composition". As a token to nostalgia, Josef Strauss had written one of his greatest masterpieces.
