Honnold And Caldwell Honoured Amongst Alpine Greats | EpicTV Climbing Daily, Ep.462

Today is something of an alpine show, with big news for those at the top of the sport, and for those wanting to join them there.

There was some big news amongst the top names of alpine climbing this week when the winners of the 2015 Piolet’s d’Or were announced. If you missed our coverage of it last year, the Piolets d’Or is basically the Oscars of climbing, awarded to the alpine ascent that an expert jury considers to be the most impressive of the year.

There have been several departures from the protocol recently, with all 6 nominees being given the award in 2013, and 2 winners sharing the prize last year. This time around, tradition has once been broken, with 3 ascents being awarded the prize in advance, in an attempt to make the event more of a celebration than a competition.

They are;

Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold, for the first complete traverse of the Fitzroy Massif.

Gukov Aleksander and Aleksey Lonchinsky for the first ascent of Thamserku’s SW face in Nepal

Ales Cesen, Luka Lindic and Marko Prezelj for the first ascent of the N face of Hagshu in India.

We’ll be covering the event, which takes place between the 8th and 12th April, and interviewing all the climbers involved so stay tuned.

Now, if you liked the look of all that action, don’t forget about the very exciting Arc’Teryx Academy, which will see some of the World’s best climbers descend on Chamonix, between the 12th and 14th June, where they could be teaching you some skills.
