Kerala government fingers Tamil Nadu, blames Mullaperiyar for deluge
  • 6 years ago
The Kerala government has pinned blame for the deadly floods on Mullaperiyar dam and Tamil Nadu government. In an affidavit to the Supreme Court, the Pinarayi Vijayan government said the sudden release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam by the Tamil Nadu government was the chief cause of the deadly deluge. Kerala claims that the sudden release of excess waters from Mullaperiyar caused an overload in the Idukki reservoir downstream and water had to be released – which triggered the deadly floods. The affidavit states that the Kerala’s water resources secretary had written to her counterpart in Tamil Nadu govt for gradual release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam ahead of time. But their repeated requests were allegedly ignored by the neighbouring-state.
