Up to 20 people feared missing in Genoa bridge collapse
  • 6 years ago
Officials in Italy say as many as 20 people could still be missing in the rubble of a collapsed bridge in Genoa.
Rescuers are continuing to comb through tons of debris in a desperate search to find further possible survivors.
Genoa's chief prosecutor said between 10 to 20 people could still be missing.
The Morandi Bridge collapsed on Tuesday, which has now left at least 38 people dead, including children.
A 12-month state of emergency for the area has been declared by the government.
While much of the blame has been placed on Autostrade, the private firm that maintains most of Italy's highways, the Eurosceptic Italian government also pointed the finger at the European Union, blaming EU budget constraints for hindering Rome's ability to strengthen its infrastructure.
The EU hit back, saying Italy was one of the main beneficiaries of the bloc's 2014 to 2020 budget for infrastructure investment.
