Cheiraoba or Manipuri New Year of the Meiteis - How it is celebrated

A festive mood enveloped the Manipur State as the official Cheiraoba Festival celebration gets under way.

"Sajibu Cheiraoba" is the new year of the Meiteis of Manipur. The Sajibu Cheiraoba is a traditional festival celebrated on the first day of Sajibu month (equivalent of April) every year.

It is observed on the first lunar day of the lunar month Sajibu (March/April) and so it is also popularly known as Sajibu Cheiraoba.

Days ahead of the festival, family members start cleaning and decorating their houses and women of the house prepare Athenpot of the best available seasonal vegetables, rice, fruits and flowers for offering to Lainingthou Sanamahi and Ima Leimarel Shidabi, who are worshipped in every household.
