Korea's R&D service industry on the rise

Research and development requires new technologies to be tested numerous times.
And as such, Korea has seen more demand for services that support R&D by managing equipment and verifying the performance of new products.
Park Se-young has more.
This equipment tests the performance of automobile parts.
It observes the cross section of a component and accurately identifies its errors.
It also tests the performance at high and low temperatures and in shaky conditions.
Various components that go into cars, mobile phones, airplanes and trains have gone through this company's testing service.

Companies that support the research development process like this are classed as part of the "R&D service industry," and are usually involved in developing and repairing research equipment or verifying new products.
There are about 12-hundred such companies in Korea, and the market is estimated to be worth around four-point-five billon U.S. dollars.
With advances in R&D, the number of research service companies has been on the rise.
And the Korean government has decided to actively foster the sector by serving as the bridge between research agencies and companies and by boosting the companies' capabilities.

"To improve the performance of research firms, the government will support the research and development of the R&D service companies. And by increasing their capability and producing successful results, we aim to construct an environment for outsourcing."

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to enact reforms aimed at fostering the industry and provide institutional support.
