북한, 종전선언 연일 재촉... 미국 호응할까? - 김현욱 박사 대담

Joining me in the studio today is Professor Kim Hyun-wook from the Korea National Diplomatic Academy
Thank you for coming in today.

Pleasure to be here.

1 - At a Senate hearing on Wednesday
Pompeo admitted that North Korea is still producing nuclear fissile material

2 - Pompeo also said their objective is still the final, fully irreversible denuclearization of North Korea
And that they hope to achieve it by the end of the Trump's first term, possibly even sooner.

3 - There has much talk about an agreement to formally declare the end of the Korean War. Currently there is only an armistice agreement, and technically the war in Korea is still on-going. North Korea has been calling on the U.S. to agree on ending the war, but the U.S. has been saying denuclearization comes first. North Korea's argument is there is no need for nuclear weapons once the war is officially over. Can the two sides be reconciled?

4 - Ending the war seems to be the key issue for North Korea. Why is that?

5 - According to reports in South Korea, North Korea is set to return of the remains of U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War on Friday as previously expected, on the anniversary of the Korean War armistice agreement. Along with recent satellite photos that reveal North Korea has started to dismantle some of its nuclear facilities, the mood seems to be turning. We will have to wait and see, but do you think this puts pressure on the U.S. to at least start to consider agreed to end the Korean War with Pyongyang?

6 - The armistice agreement was signed by the U.S. representing the UN forces, North Korea and China. Interestingly South Korea was not involved. But that means if a declaration to end the Korean War is to be made, won't China need to be involved? Would North Korea want China to be involved?

7 - Why would China want to be involved in ending the Korean War? What do you they gain from it?
