News Alert: Scientist Warns Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Eruption A Sign Of Super Volcano Ahead
The eruption in the lower east rift zone continues without much change. Lava from fissure 8 is feeding a fountain that reaches heights of 150 to 180 feet as measured during the overnight hours by HVO field crews. Lava is feeding a channel that flows about eight miles to the ocean entry at Kapoho. The interesting thing about this lava channel is that it is incandescent or glowing orange for nearly its entire length indicating that the lava channel is becoming very effieceint about transporting hot lava over that distance. There is a weak plume of laze and steam generated at the ocean entry focusing mostly on the southern portion near Vacationland.
At the summit, this morning at about 8:26am there was a seismic event that produced at weak plume that traveled about 1,600 feet above the crater and disappated relatively quickly. Today the UAS or unoccupied aviation services team is going to be up at the summit to take some pictures that can be used to produce digital elevation models that will tell us what’s going on up there and record the changes. That’s the video update for today.
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano also continues to wreak devastation since a series of eruptions began in early May.
