Residents flee eastern Ghouta as pro-government bombardment continues
  • 6 years ago
Residents in Syria's eastern Ghouta are reported to be fleeing the area or sheltering underground as pro-government forces continue to bombard the rebel-held enclave.
Last week, Syria's ally Russia proposed a five hour daily pause in the shelling to allow civilians to leave and aid to come in.
But that, along with a UN-backed ceasefire, came to nothing as pro-regime forces continued their airstrikes and artillery fire, with reports that civilians attempting to leave through so-called 'humanitarian corridors' have been targeted.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad insists he's eliminating those he calls terrorists, but other nations accuse him of targeting civilians and causing human suffering.
