Next year, an attempt will be made to drive faster than the speed of sound—at 800mph—and break the world land speed record. This record attempt is one of The Economist's predictions for the top ten moments of 2017.

In October 2017 the eyes of the world will be on the Kalahari Desert. At South Africa's Hakskeen Pan, the Bloodhound Supersonic team will attempt to drive a car at the fastest speed on record. Faster than the speed of sound.

The target speed is 800mph. The driver - Andy Green. Any's confidence is understandable. The current record holder, the only person in the world to have broken the sound barrier on land is him.

But it's not just the thrill or the glory that is motivating Andy to do it again. Andy's every move will be streamed live to a global audience which is why his record attempt is set to be one of the unforgettable moments of 2017.
