Former footballer George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai are well ahead in Liberia’s presidential poll, according to partial results.

It means the two candidates look set to contest November’s run-off in what would be the west African nation’s first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years.

The Liberian electoral commission gave Weah 39.2 percent of the vote, compared to Boakai’s 29.6 percent. Charles Brumskine, a lawyer, was a distant third with 9.7 percent.

The election is seeking to choose the successor to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – Africa’s first elected female president and a Nobel Peace laureate.
