I think most brand name bicycles tend to either use Shimano or SRAM component groups with equivalent pricing structures. Many are built in China and Taiwan, some in Europe and the US. The way I see it is that the bike frame is the main difference between brands, and that difference is more of personal preference and fit.\r
\r
One benefit of the big brands is that many have lifetime warranties on the frames as long as they have not been in a crash. Another benefit of buying a brand name like Trek is the resale value compared to a no-name brand.\r
\r
Another benefit of brand name bicycles isnt necessarily the bike itself but the culture and relationship the bike dealers can form with the consumer to get them more engaged and interested in riding be it sharing general tips, local trail information, local group rides, events and races. But this of course depends on the local bike shop and is not necessary to be attributed to the bike manufurers themselves, in my opinion.\r
\r
Brand names also allows riders to keep track of which they like and which they dislike, although even brands change over time as technology evolves and ownership changes.\r
\r
I do not intend to ever sell my bikes (who buys used single speed bikes anyway :p) because I plan to run them into the ground like my old car. I will probably give them away for parts, as I have done before, to the local bicycle charity when the times comes.\r
\r
Actually, I own one major brand name bicycle, my Diamondback, which doesnt quite have the same reputation as many of the other brands but its my bike so I dont care.\r
\r
What is the best bike? Answer: The bike you are riding right now.\r
