Trump scores a win in the culture war as NFL seeks to ensure players stand for national anthem

Three weeks ago, President Trump was widely criticized for fanning racial divisions and inflaming the culture wars after he denounced a black NFL player for kneeling during the national anthem, casting the move as unpatriotic and an affront to the country.

The player had intended the demonstration to call attention to police brutality against African Americans.

What began as an impromptu, crowd-pleasing line at a Trump rally in Huntsville, Ala., to “get that son of a bitch off the field right now!” sparked a national debate over free speech, patriotism, racial identity and cultural values. Rather than back off and try to unify the nation, Trump upped the ante relentlessly — and on Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell capitulated.

Washington DC Loses Gun Battle in Court

A divided federal appeals court said Tuesday that a District of Columbia law restricting the right to carry a concealed firearm in public was a violation of the Second Amendment.

D.C. requires gun owners who want a concealed-carry permit to show a “good reason to fear injury or a “proper reason” such as transporting valuables.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit declared the regulation too restrictive in a 2-1 decision, The Washington Post reported.

“The good-reason law is necessarily a total ban on most D.C. residents’ right to carry a gun in the face of ordinary self-defense needs, where these residents are no more dangerous with a gun than the next law-abiding citizen,” Judge Thomas B. Griffith wrote.

“At the Second Amendment’s core lies the right of responsible citizens to carry firearms for personal self-defense beyond the home, subject to longstanding restrictions,” the judge said. “These traditional limits include, for instance, licensing requirements, but not bans on carrying in urban areas like D.C. or bans on carrying absent a special need for self-defense.

Canada willing to broker peace between U.S. and North Korea

Canada’s ambassador to China, John McCallum, says that Beijing is angry with North Korea, but Canada is willing to “help to broker a peace” on the Korean Peninsula.

“I think China, to use an undiplomatic word, is getting more and more pissed off with North Korea,” McCallum, who took over Canada’s diplomatic post in the country after nearly two decades in Parliament, told CTV’s Question Period. “They seem to be goading their only friend, so China is doing more to implement the sanctions than it had before.”

With multiple nuclear and missile tests this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has increasingly tested the resolve of the international community. That has led to several United Nations-backed sanctions packages as well as an escalating war of words between the young autocrat and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Wilderness Handgun Carry in Canada

Advocating for the civilian carry of handguns in the Canadian wilderness

General practice by the government is unfortunately to deny almost everyone the option of how to defend themselves against wild animals while in the back country, and this needs to change. The Charter of Rights guarantees the right to safety and security of a person, and since it is impossible for an officer of the law to protect someone while in the back country, the only option people have is to arm themselves, and anyone that has spent any time in the wilderness knows that carrying a long gun around with you as you’re working, or portaging a canoe etc. is almost impossible. The only reliable option we have is to carry a handgun. While some are allowed, most are not, and unless the politicians and bureaucrats of this country are openly consenting that one man is worth less than another, denying anyone the authorization to carry in the wilderness would appear to be inconsistent with the constitution.
