At least 22 people have been killed and 20 injured in a stampede at the Elphinstone railway station in Mumbai according to Indian officials.

The commotion occured when commuters sought shelter in the station’s pedestrian footbridge after a sudden monsoon downpour. A sudden stampede then broke out in the overcrowded area, leading to multiple casualties, according to witnesses.

Police have gathered at the station to look into the incident, and India’s new railways minister Piyush Goyal has gone to Mumbai to oversee the investigation.
