Police Scotland crime clear-up rate slumps to new low
POLICE Scotland’s crime clear-up rate has fallen to the lowest level since the formation of the single force, according to damning new figures. Scottish Conservative shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr said: “The fall in clear-up rates will be immensely concerning to people right across the country.“We’re now in a situation where criminals know they literally have a 50/50 chance of getting away with their illegal activity.“Much more needs to be done by the Scottish Government to help police increase these clear-up rates.”Lib Dem justice spokesman Liam McArthur said: “Police officers and staff work around the clock to keep us safe but they simply don’t have the resources and support they need. “The clear-up rate is at its lowest level since Police Scotland was established and people will be concerned that the SNP’s squeeze on the police is having an impact on their ability to clear up crime.” Overall, recorded crime in Scotland fell by three per cent last year to the lowest level since 1974, with housebreaking, theft, drug crimes and vandalism all down. However, the number of homicides rose by 30 per cent from 81 in 2015 to 105 last year, while attempted murder, serious assault and robbery all saw significant increases.Sexual crimes also increased again, partly due to the continued trend of historical crimes being reported and also the surge in cyber sex fiends.Online offending now accounts for one in five of all sexual crimes, while more than three-quarters of victims were female and more than half under 16. The vast majority of perpetrators were male.

As a result, Justice Secretary Michael Matheson said he would set up an expert group with leading figures from the fields of justice, education and health to tackle the problem. He said: “The sexual crimes research makes clear that more work is required to understand why particularly young males are behaving in this way and to prevent sexual offending.”Solicitor General Alison Di Rollo QC added: “Too many children and young people are coming into contact with our justice system as a result of sexual offending, and we know that technology has an increasingly significant part to play.”Mr Matheson also promised to keep up the “relentless focus” on fighting crime, adding: “While the continued fall in recorded crime to historically low levels is encouraging, I remain focused on ensuring everyone feels safe in their community.”DCC Rose Fitzpatrick said: “Recorded crime information tells just one part of the story around policing efforts to keep communities safe; -officers and staff are committed to responding to the many thousands of calls for service we receive annually, the majority of which do not involve recorded crime.”. 00FastNews.
