German election: Who will be in the 'Jamaica' coalition with Angela Merkel?
ANGELA Merkel has managed to hold on to power despite the rise of the far-right populist party Alternative for Germany (Afd). But who will she form a coalition with? This means Mrs Merkel is left with no choice but to try and form a three-way coalition with the Free Democrats (FPD) and the Greens. The three-way coalition has been dubbed ‘Jamaica’ because the parties' black, yellow and green colours mirror its flag. Talks could drag on until Christmas. The FDP set the stage for tough coalition talks, saying they would not agree to a deal that did not promise a change in the German government’s direction.“It is not up to us to form a ‘Jamaica coalition’ at any price,” deputy party leader Wolfgang Kubicki told the press. FDP party leader Christian Lindner said that changes were needed in Germany’s energy policy and its stance on euro zone fiscal policy. Mrs Merkel now faces a different term in government because the coalition could riven by deep divisions on issues from migrants to tax, the environment and Europe.In particular, the prospect of Mrs Merkel sharing power with the FDP could scupper Emmanuel Macron’s plans for deeper integration of the eurozone.The reform ideas ‘will not see the light of day’ now that the FDP is set to become part of the coalition, according to the Centre for European Reform (CER). Sophia Besch, research fellow at the CER, said the German elections will not affect the outcome of Brexit because all the parties share a similar stance. She said: “All major German parties want to maintain close economic and political ties to Britain post-Brexit, and limit the economic fallout. “But Germans are also adamant that there will be no cherry-picking by the British after Brexit, that means no selective participation in the single market. “That line holds even if the pro-business FDP becomes Merkel’s coalition partner: German businesses are more dependent on a functioning single market, than on trade with the UK.”. 00FastNews.
