President Trump on Sunday continued to speak out against NFL players.
President Trump on Sunday tweeted yet again about NFL players who do not stand for the national anthem, asking the league to "fire or suspend" them.
"If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!" Trump said.
"NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN," Trump continued in another tweet. "Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S."
According to the New York Times, the controversy started on Friday after the president "used an expletive to describe players who kneel or sit during the anthem to protest police brutality against black Americans and other forms of social injustice."
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b---h off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!'" Trump said at a campaign-style rally in Alabama.
The president then tweeted on the issue Saturday.
"If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem," Trump said. "If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!"
Trump's remarks have prompted numerous reactions.
"The line that marks the balance between the rights of every citizen in our great country gets crossed when someone is told to just 'shut up and play,'" DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL players union, said in a statement.
